About the route
The Podravina village of Hlebine is the birthplace of one of Croatia's most valuable cultural and artistic phenomena – the Hlebine school of naïve art.
The landscapes of Podravina, their colours and contrasts, its villages and the faces of its people inspired the Hlebine painters, and by exploring this part of Croatia by bike you can get closer to them and experience, in direct contact with nature, the landscapes they immortalised in their work.
This lovely trekking route takes you right through that picturesque countryside, with the village of Hlebine as its goal, where we recommend a break and a must-see visit to its excellent naïve art venues.
The miracle of the Hlebine school began in the early 1930s with the appearance of three names on the art scene: Krsto Hegedušić, Ivan Generalić and Franjo Mraz. Their works travelled to many countries and achieved great success around the world.

Tips and safety
Always wear a helmet. Bring enough food and water. Take particular care on sections of the routes that use tarmac roads, especially where there is no cycle lane. Don't forget extra clothing in case of bad weather or a drop in temperature. Avoid riding at night; if you do ride in the dark, always switch on your lights and wear a reflective vest or clothing. Assess your own fitness carefully and don't take on an effort you are not sure you can manage. Check that your bike is in good working order before every ride. Use hand signals when turning. Ride in single file on roads. Obey the traffic rules.
