Ploče
A port town and the “gateway to the Neretva” for visitors from the north-west, surrounded by the Baćina Lakes and the river mouth.
Ploče, the second largest town in the Neretva Valley, is also one of the youngest towns in Croatia. It was built in the second half of the 20th century as one of the most important ports on the Adriatic, a status it has kept to this day.
For visitors arriving from the west or north-west, Ploče is the “gateway to the Neretva”. The port town is surrounded by natural beauty such as the chain of gentle, unspoilt Baćina Lakes, via which you can travel upstream to Polje Jezero, a fertile field created by draining a former real lake, which links Ploče with the Dalmatian hinterland. On the other side of town, to the south-east, lies the main mouth of the Neretva, and one of the finest views of it is from Trovro hill above Rogotin, home to the only wind organ in this part of the world.
