Baćina Lakes

A chain of gentle, unspoilt lakes near Ploče, with a birdwatching hide, kayak hire and swimming.

The port town of Ploče is surrounded by natural beauty such as the chain of gentle, unspoilt Baćina Lakes, a unique natural phenomenon, via which you can travel upstream to Polje Jezero.

Water from the Matica River, which flows through the beautiful Polje Jezero field from Vrgorac in the Dalmatian hinterland towards Ploče, drains into the Baćina Lakes through a specially dug tunnel. Polje Jezero was once a real lake, drained to create fertile farmland in the otherwise barren karst landscape; today it is known as Croatia’s largest wine-growing area.

The lakes offer plenty of pleasures: a visit to the birdwatching hide, kayak hire, swimming and other attractions ideal for a day out with family and friends.
