Klis Fortress

Monumental, spectacular and of great historical and architectural importance, Klis Fortress is one of the most impressive fortifications in Croatia. Set on the pass between the Kozjak and Mosor mountains and facing the sea, it guarded the strategic route between Split and the Dalmatian interior and on towards Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although first mentioned as early as the 5th century, its strategic importance during the wars with the Ottomans made Klis a legendary Uskok stronghold, in events that could rival any Hollywood epic.

Today Klis is a first-class attraction with spectacular views of Split, the central Dalmatian islands and the blue sea beyond. The whole world has seen its beauty: the fortress was one of the Croatian filming locations of the hit series Game of Thrones.
