Natural History Museum Metković

A museum in the centre of Metković whose ornithological collection of more than 340 specimens is among the largest of its kind in Europe.

Before the major land-reclamation works that turned it into “Croatia’s California”, the Neretva Valley looked very different. The branching wetland was a challenge for people’s daily lives, but a paradise for birds.

This natural wealth is presented in the ornithological collection of the Natural History Museum in the very centre of Metković, which, with more than 340 specimens, ranks among the largest of its kind in Europe. The museum holds specimens of 218 of the 310 bird species recorded on the Neretva, some of which, such as the Dalmatian pelican, the white-headed duck and the marbled duck, are sadly no longer found in the area.
