Metković
The largest town in the Neretva Valley, right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a practical base for exploring the region by bike and for its history and culture.
The Neretva Valley “begins” in Metković. The largest town in the region lies right by the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and spreads across both banks of the river, with its historic centre on the southern bank. Set at a crossroads inhabited since Illyrian times, Metković is a practical starting point for exploring the region by bike, as well as its history and culture.
The town centre is home to the Natural History Museum with its rich ornithological collection, and just a few kilometres to the west, in Vid, stands the Narona Archaeological Museum, the first in situ museum in Croatia, built over a temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus in the centre of the once important Roman city of Narona.
Among its many attractions and events, Metković is also known as the starting point of the famous Maraton lađa, a unique rowing race in traditional Neretva boats that ends in Ploče after some twenty gruelling kilometres.
