A village below the famous fortress on the pass that links Split with the Dalmatian interior.
Klis Fortress towers over the pass that connects the Dalmatian interior with Split. The long, turbulent and fascinating history of the fortress and the village of the same name includes a spell as a capital, many sieges and conquests, and Klis is also where the famous Uskoks came from, who left a significant mark on Croatian history.
Today Klis is a quiet place that symbolically links the large, developed city of Split with its calmer hinterland. Thanks to its convenient position it should be an essential part of discovering the area by bike – few experiences can match the views from the Klis crag over Split, the sea and the nearby islands. For those keen to discover “the Zagora as it once was”, there is the wide hinterland of Klis, between the Kozjak and Svilaja mountains.
