The imposing ruins of a 12th-century fortress on the bare rocks of Kalnik, above the mountain hut.
The fortress complex near Kalnik's highest peak dates from the 12th century, though the site was settled much earlier. Veliki Kalnik played an especially important role during the Mongol threat: it sheltered the Croatian-Hungarian King Sigismund and witnessed the failure of the Mongol siege. According to legend, the people of the area have been nicknamed šljivari (plum people) ever since, after the fruit that fed and ultimately saved the fortress's defenders.
The climb towards the top of Kalnik starts at junction 13 and follows segment 19 towards junction 17.
