Blaca Hermitage
A 16th-century Glagolitic monastery complex that seems to grow out of the rock on the southern slopes of Brač; reachable only on foot.
Deep in the southern slopes of Brač lies the Blaca Hermitage – a monastery complex that looks as if it has grown out of the rock. It was founded by Glagolitic priests who fled the coast from the Ottomans in the 16th century and built a little monastic paradise in the stony wilderness, with a rich library, living quarters, farm buildings, vineyards and olive groves. The monastery was active until 1963 and is today one of the most valuable cultural and historical sights on Brač. Whichever way you come, it can only be reached on foot, after a half-hour walk.
